Text to speech Chromebook

Getting started with text to speech

Following version of DigiExam support text to speech:

  • Chromebook client: 11.1.1 and newer

Support for following languages:

  • *ChromeOS has support for the following languages: English.

(*Official support is only for English, additional languages are not tested due to lack of support from Chromebook)

 

Additional languages can be installed using the guide Add text to speech languages on Chromebooks with managed environments

The settings for text to speech is the same as spell check when creating an exam.

Create an exam with text to speech

To allow text to speech for all students on an exam, choose the alternative 'All students' in the drop-down menu.

Allow text to speech for an individual student by going to "Students" In the left main menu.

Find the student and enable “Allow spell check for this student” in the accessibility settings and then save.

If you don't want students to have text to speech during an exam you select "None"

 

Client

NOTE: If a student  uses headphones, these need to be connected before the exam starts for it to work during the exam.

In the top left corner next to the settings icon you see a speaking figure (see Figure 2). If you press this icon while you have text marked, it will then be read out loud. Text to speech is also possible on PDF documents and websites.

Chrome English is the standard voice when an exam is started, you can and change voice and language in settings. (English is the only officially tested language)

It is also possible to get a slower voice by pulling the slider towards the tortoise and faster if you pull it towards the hare.
You can also have the text read out loud by using short command [Alt] + [A] when you have text selected, so you don't need to press the speaking figure every time.
