This guide will demonstrate how to configure and roll out the Digiexam Toolbox and student application using Intune as the cloud based management system for your student devices. It is a similar process to other MDM deployments in a Microsoft environment. In this guide you will find instructions on how to automatically install Digiexam on Macbook and Windows laptops.
The Digiexam Toolbox .msi is a universal installer that allows the Digiexam student application to be downloaded, installed, updated and uninstalled by student users.
Note that the Digiexam Toolbox and the Digiexam Student Application are two unique and separate applications. What organizations need to install and package is the Digiexam Toolbox. From there, the Digiexam Toolbox Service will grant install and update permissions for the Digiexam Student Application. This means only 1 app (Digiexam Toolbox) needs to be installed and the non-admin users can then install Digiexam on the fly from their Digiexam Toolbox.
Two services are required to be on the school or organization’s allow list (DigiexamWindowsService.exe and DigiexamToolboxService.exe). They are detailed later in the article.
Click on the links below to find out more information about each type of management scenario.
Configuration of Digiexam as a Windows App
In this section you will find information about configuration and deployment of the Digiexam client application as a "line of business" app.
Configuring Digiexam as a Line-of-business App
Navigate to the app section in your Intune environment and underneath "All apps" you should add a new application (figure 1).
figure 1
In the window that appears (figure 2), click upon the app type of "Line-of-business app" from the dropdown menu that appears and then choose "Select" to begin configuring your application.
figure 2
Line-of-business applications require an install file, and at this point make sure you have downloaded the Digiexam .msi file. Use this file to begin configuring the Digiexam Toolbox application (figure 3).
figure 3
The application's settings will display and you can now begin to configure how the Digiexam Toolbox app will be installed on students' managed devices. The application will install to individual user profiles (figure 4) meaning that the app will be installed in the user's program files folder automatically and will not require administrator permissions to run.
You may wish to configure whether or not the app version is ignored so as to only run the version of the Digiexam Toolbox included in the .msi file. We recommend selecting "Yes" under "Ignore app version" to allow for auto-updates to this app in the event we push updates to the installer, making sure that you are always using the latest and most up to date version of the toolbox (figure 4).
figure 4
This .msi configuration does not require any further configuration aside from including the publisher (Digiexam) name.
Lastly configure the assignment of the Digiexam Toolbox application by adding groups, users and/or devices to deploy the app correctly (figure 5). Contact us at support@digiexam.com if you encounter issues.
figure 5
If the configuration is correct you can create the application and it will be deployed to student devices at this point.
Configuring Digiexam as a Win32 App
In this section you will find information about configuration and deployment of the Digiexam client application as a "new" MS Store app as well as a "Win32" app. This type of deployment is used for Autopilot scenarios where detection rules, retry behaviors, dependencies and scheduled deployments are important.
The first steps in this process involve bundling the Digiexam Toolbox MSI file as a IntuneWin File. The process requires that you as an administrator have installed the IntuneWinAppUtil application on your machine and downloaded the Digiexam Toolbox MSI file.
Find and open the IntuneWinApp Utility on your machine.
figure 1
Specify the MSI file location and eventual extraction location of the IntuneWin file (figure 2).
figure 2
You are now ready to use the IntuneWin file for an eventual configuration of deployment.
Navigate to the app section in your Intune environment and underneath "All apps" you should add a new application (figure 3).
figure 3
In the window that appears (figure 4), click upon the app type of "Win32 Application" from the dropdown menu that appears and then choose "Select" to begin configuring your application.
figure 4
Select your Digiexam Toolbox IntuneWin file and begin the configuration process (figure 5) by filling in the corresponding fields for name, description and the publisher (Digiexam).
figure 5
Continue configuring the application by moving to the "Program" tab (figure 6). The install and uninstall commands from the original MSI file will be populated in the corresponding fields. You may wish to alter the installation time required and device restart behavior depending on what is required for your managed device environment.
figure 6
On the requirements tab it is possible to determine device requirements that need to be met before the app is installed (figure 7).
figure 7
The last part of the Win32 App configuration is to set up detection rules for installation (figure 8). It is possible to manually configure the detection rules, and when configuring these rules we recommend that the rule type used is "MSI" (figure 9). The product code will automatically display during the configuration and from there you can choose whether or not to do a product version check (optional).
figure 8
figure 9
This is the last step in the configuration process. You should review and save your configuration settings for the Win32 App. The app will be uploaded with the settings and then deployed to your managed devices based upon when you have made it available for them.
Allowing Digiexam Services
The Digiexam Windows Service (DigiexamWindowsService.exe) and the Digiexam Toolbox Service (DigiexamToolboxService.exe) are two executable services that must be allowed by an IT administrator at a school so as to allow the application to lock the student device and update the student application properly. Failure to do so will cause the application to either not be installed and update or not be able to lock down an assignment.
The Digiexam Toolbox Service is an application that is initially installed during the .msi packaging and deployment. This service controls the device’s ability to initially download, install, update and uninstall the Digiexam student app. This service can be found in the Services application on a Windows device. It’s properties are displayed below in figure 6:
figure 6
The Digiexam Windows Service is an application that runs lockdown operations in the background when running the Digiexam student application. This service also needs to be allowed in order for the Digiexam student application to run correctly (figure 7).

Configuration of Digiexam as a macOS App
In this section you will find information about configuration and deployment of the Digiexam client application as a macOS app.
Configuring Digiexam as a macOS App
Navigate to the app section in your Intune environment and underneath "All apps" you should add a new application (figure 6).
figure 6
In the window that appears, click upon the app type of "macOS app (DMG)" from the dropdown menu that appears and then choose "Select" to upload and begin configuring the application (figure 7 & 8). You will need to download the latest version of the Digiexam application's .pkg file prior to uploading.
figure 7
figure 8
In the app information tab that displays you will need to include the publisher name (Digiexam). All other fields are non-mandatory fields (figure 9).
figure 9
You can continue past the program settings as no pre or post scripts are required. When selecting requirements be sure to include the minimum operating system for devices (figure 10).
figure 10
After you have selected the minimum operating system requirement you will need to then verify the detection rules for the devices. You do not need to change any values in this section of the configuration.
Lastly configure the assignment of the Digiexam application by adding groups, users and/or devices to deploy the app correctly (figure 11).
figure 11
If the configuration is correct you can create the application and it will be deployed to student devices at this point. Contact us at support@digiexam.com if you encounter issues.
