Chromebooks - Kiosk apps are no longer supported by default on Chrome OS 138

With Google's latest update to Chrome OS 138 (July 2025), Kiosk apps are no longer supported by default. This means that the Digiexam app cannot be started in Kiosk mode. It is possible to extend and allow Kiosk apps by changing the policies for the devices and allowing them to continue to be used for a limited time.

The problem manifests itself as students trying to start Digiexam in Kiosk mode receiving the following message:

To avoid this, ensure that default settings are changed to allow Kiosk apps for a limited time.

To extend and allow, follow the steps below:

Log in to Google Admin. Navigate to:

Devices → Chrome → Settings

From there select the “Device Settings” tab and search for “Chrome Apps allowed for kiosk mode.”

Change the setting to "Keep using Chrome apps in kiosk sessions for a limited time" to allow student devices to still access the Digiexam application.

We are currently developing an Android app and will move away from Kiosk apps during 2025. For more information we refer to our article Platform updates 2025
