Troubleshooting Guide: Installing the New Digiexam App / Toolbox (Windows)
General information 2025
The new student app for Windows and Mac is now available for download and installation through our public channels. Information about version updates and new releases can be found on our Release Notes page.
Download and general information pages about the Windows and MacBook Student applications are linked below:
- The legacy app for Windows and Mac will be supported until January 8th.
- The new Chromebook app will be developed in Q1 and Q2 2026 to align with Google's phasing out of Chrome apps in kiosk mode.
- The iPad application will receive the new features included in the Windows and Mac versions as part of a regular update.
Note! The new application communicates using the HTTP/2 protocol. Accordingly, the Network Requirements have been updated, including the addition of new hosts that must be permitted on your school’s network.
For additional information, please see the section Network requirements.
Information for Exam Administrators and Teachers:
Transitioning to the new student application does not affect the creation, grading or monitoring of assignments and exams in Digiexam. The downloaded student app has changed in function and form to better support current devices and security technologies. All existing exams can be used as you normally would.

Windows:
The new application can be installed using two methods:
-
New: Automatic installation and update using Digiexam Toolbox.
Digiexam Toolbox is our latest addition to the Digiexam app family. It enables installation, update, start and uninstallation of the Digiexam Student application without requiring downloads of new versions each time. It replaces the old, automatic update system.
Digiexam Toolbox is installed at the machine level either by the individual with administrator rights on their device or deployed centrally to student computers in managed environments. Once Toolbox is installed, students can then install, open, and update the exam application. It is recommended that students use the Toolbox initially to update to the new student app, but then they can use the student app normally for updates after this.
Read more about how Toolbox works HERE.
-
Manual download (.msi) and installation of the latest static version of the application (requires manual update). This download is located on our Windows app information download page.
- Digiexam will no longer be available in the Microsoft Store as distribution is now possible using Digiexam Toolbox or standalone .msi versions for student devices.
We have a rigorous quality assurance procedure, but we always recommend installing and testing our applications in your environment to guarantee that the application works as intended on your student devices. Should you experience problems during testing, please contact our support.
MacOS:
The new Digiexam Student application is available for MacOS and can be downloaded from our Mac app information and download page.
MacBooks will receive autoupdates normally upon the start of the new Digiexam Student application. This will occur after the initial download of the new student application and replacement of the legacy application on the student device.
An update to Monterey 12.0 or later is required.
The Digiexam Student app now supports remote proctoring as well, and the legacy application for Mac environments will follow the same deprecation cycle as Windows.
iOS:
No major changes, new features will come as part of a regular update during spring 2026
Chromebook:
The new Chromebook app will be developed in Q1 and Q2 2026 to align with Google's phasing out of Chrome apps in kiosk mode. The new Digiexam Chromebook app will be a Progressive Web Application (PWA).
It is planned that the old/current app will continue to receive support in Q1 and Q2 2026 to resolve any bugs that may arise, but no new feature development will be prioritised for the old app during this time.
Google's update to ChromeOS 138 has turned off kiosk apps by default. Your organisation can continue to use Digiexam, but will need to allow kiosk apps to run in your Google Workspace. For more information, we refer to our guide: Allow Kiosk apps for a continued period on Chromebooks

*Right now, the app is in a transition period where both versions are available at the same time to make the switch easier. The old app (version 15.x.x) will continue to be supported for a while longer, until the new app is considered stable enough for all schools.
