EPERM: operation not permitted (offline hand in on USB)

In order to do a offline hand in on a USB-stick, the Digiexam-client needs access to the Removable volumes, in this case the USB-stick. If the Digiexam-client does not have it, the following error message will appear:

Error: EPERM: operation not permitted, open '/Volumes/USB-name/ExamID-StudentCode

USB-name: the name of the particular USB.
Exam ID: the exam ID for the exam that is being handed in.
StudentCode: the student code for the student that is trying to hand in the exam.

Mac

NOTE! You need to click on the padlock and enter your password to be able to change these settings.

Open System Settings > Privacy & SecurityFull Disk Access > Make sure that the checkbox Digiexam is checked (figure 1). If Digiexam is not there, add Digiexam via the plus button (+).

Windows

In the case of Windows, some USB sticks have been formatted with the NTFS format. If possible, format the USB stick with another format, e.g. exFat (back up the content first). If the NTFS formatting is to be retained, then write-permission must be given to it so that Digiexam can write on it. This is done as follows:

  1. Insert the USB drive.
  2. Open File explorer.
  3. Right click on the USB drive.
  4. Click on Properties.
  5. open the tab Security.
  6. Click on Edit to change Permissions.
  7. Select the user and allow Full control to that user.
